How Internet Works in Gothenburg
Most of Gothenburg is served by a city-owned open fiber network operated by Göteborg Energi Stadsnät. This is a so-called stadsnät (city network) — a neutral infrastructure layer that multiple internet service providers (ISPs) can use. You pick the ISP you want; they deliver service over the same physical cables.
This open-network model is common in Swedish cities and gives you real choice between providers. In practice, you’ll often see 5–10 ISPs available at the same address, competing on price and service quality.
Outside the central areas — in suburbs like Angered, Bergsjön, or newer developments — fiber coverage can be patchier. Mobile broadband is a practical fallback in those cases.
Fiber (fiber)
The most common connection type in Gothenburg. Fast, stable, and usually the cheapest per megabit. Requires a fiber socket in your home — most apartments built or renovated after ~2005 have one.
Mobile Broadband (mobilt bredband)

Swedish address
You need a confirmed Swedish residential address to order home broadband. A temporary hotel or hostel address won’t work. If you’re renting, make sure your tenancy agreement is in place first.
Personnummer or coordination number
A personnummer is Sweden’s personal identity number, issued by Skatteverket (the Swedish Tax Agency) once you register as a resident. Most ISPs require this to run a credit check. If you don’t have one yet, some providers accept a samordningsnummer (coordination number), issued to people who don’t qualify for a personnummer — for example, short-term residents or international students. Not all ISPs accept a coordination number, so it’s worth checking before you apply.
BankID
BankID is Sweden’s standard digital identity verification tool, used by banks, authorities, and most ISPs for online signing. You typically need a Swedish bank account to get BankID. If you don’t have BankID yet, some providers allow identity verification by post or in person — but the process is slower.
